The Association of Telephones, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) has strongly opposed the recent proposal by telecom operators to increase tariffs for calls and data services, warning of the adverse effects on consumers already struggling with economic hardships.
During a stakeholders meeting with the media on Friday, ATCIS National President, Mr. Sina Bilesanmi, criticized the timing of the proposed hike, calling it insensitive to the current economic realities faced by Nigerians. Despite a slight drop in inflation to 33.40% in July 2024, Bilesanmi pointed out that the telecom sector’s contribution to GDP has declined, questioning the necessity of a tariff increase.
“Nigerians are already facing significant financial pressures,” Bilesanmi noted, “and any increase in telecom tariffs would disproportionately affect subscribers, many of whom are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.”
ATCIS outlined several non-negotiable conditions that must be met before any tariff increases are considered. These include a substantial improvement in service quality, proper consultation with consumer advocacy groups, fair and transparent billing practices, and recognition of customer loyalty.
The association also urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to exercise its regulatory authority to ensure transparency in any proposed tariff increases and to explore alternative solutions that address both industry needs and consumer affordability concerns.
