Awba Ofemili Celebrates First Indigenous Catholic Priest in 31 Years

The community of Awba Ofemili in Awka North Local Government Area celebrated the ordination of an indigenous Catholic priest, Reverend Father Joseph Iloegbunam, marking the first such occasion in 31 years.

The thanksgiving and reception ceremony in honor of Father Iloegbunam took place at St. Paul’s Parish, Awba Ofemili, drawing Catholic faithful, community members, and well-wishers from across the region. Attendees showered the new priest with gifts in gratitude to God for the milestone event.

During the service, Reverend Father Celestine Muonwe, Director of the FIDES School of Theology, warned Christians against the pursuit of material wealth, reminding them that it contradicts God’s will and can prevent entry into His kingdom.

Key figures, including the Parish Priest of St. Paul’s, Reverend Father Joseph Nwilo, Awba’s Traditional Ruler Igwe Ernest Maduagwuna, event Chairman Chief Edmond Okafor, and others, expressed joy at the community’s ability to produce another priest after more than three decades. They prayed for divine strength and guidance for Father Iloegbunam as he begins his priesthood journey.
