The women’s wing of the Awka Development Union Nigeria (ADUN) held its 2024 Annual General Meeting, urging members to be agents of change starting within their families despite contemporary challenges.
During the event, President General Barrister Oge Ekweozor highlighted the meeting’s significance for Awka women, serving as a platform to discuss issues affecting the community. She noted that the gathering also involves fervent prayers against the negative trends in Awka and school visits to mentor the youth.
Barrister Ekweozor expressed gratitude to Messrs. Obianamma Onwuemelie, Nkiru Onwuemelie, Oby Nnebe, Amaechi Chibogu, Fred Chinwuba, and others for their contributions to hosting the AGM and providing support to the participating women.
Mrs. Nma Okafor, a retired Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, remarked that the annual gathering encourages women to uphold their responsibilities to their families and society. Mrs. Ngozi Ozoemena, a leader of the Ezi section of Awka in the organization, advocated for greater recognition of women’s roles and cautioned against substance abuse among youths.
Other speakers included Dr. Ifeoma Aguiyi, who praised Barrister Ekweozor for her purposeful leadership, and Mr. Ikechukwu Chinweze from the Awka Youth Council, who emphasized the vital role of women as catalysts for change and called for collective action against societal anomalies.
The event featured the launch of the organization’s constitution and the distribution of palliatives, including rice, beans, and garri, to the women in attendance.
