Awka Residents Urge Anambra Government to Address Flooding Crisis Caused by Poor Drainage

Residents of Abel Arinze Close in Awka are calling on the Anambra State Government to urgently address the persistent flooding in their area, which they attribute to a poorly constructed drainage system linked to an ongoing construction project.

Following a heavy downpour, ABS News arrived at the scene to find numerous residents attempting to salvage damaged property, with some resorting to makeshift exits through their fences as floodwaters blocked their gates.

Mrs. Ebelechukwu Onyeama, who was forced to flee her home with her three-week-old grandchild, urged the state government to intervene. She expressed concern over the inadequate drainage system, which has led to constant flooding since construction began on the nearby Solution Fun City project. She called on the government to ensure that the contractors properly rechannel the drainage system.

Mr. and Mrs. Abel Arinze, long-time residents of the street, revealed they had previously written to the Ministry of Works, which assured them the drainage issue would be addressed. However, they voiced frustration with the contractor’s negligence in linking the drainage systems, which has caused repeated flooding. They reported that a fence separating the street from the Solution Fun City collapsed during one of the incidents, worsening the flooding and causing property damage worth millions of naira.

Another resident, Police officer Mr. Henry Akunna, echoed the appeal to the state government, urging immediate intervention to prevent further damage and loss. Residents are hopeful the government will take swift action to resolve the issue before the situation escalates.
