Azura Power West Africa will officially launch a 240-kilowatt solar car park at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) on Tuesday. The event will be officiated by Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, as part of an initiative that aligns with Nigeria’s energy transition goals and President Bola Tinubu’s power sector reforms.
According to Murtala Bello, Head of Corporate Affairs at Azura Power West Africa, the installation is part of Azura’s “Power to Change” program, which underscores the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Bello explained that the solar project is more than just an infrastructure addition; it represents a significant stride toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to promote educational and social advancement through renewable energy.
Azura Power allocates $1 million annually to support sustainability projects across health, education, and infrastructure. The solar car park is expected to meet 75 percent of the energy needs for approximately 2,650 engineering students at UNN, generating over 400,000 kWh of clean energy per year and providing a reliable power supply to enhance learning.
With an investment of about N900 million, the solar installation is anticipated to save around N150 million annually on energy costs and support Nigeria’s net-zero objectives.
“This project exemplifies Azura Power’s commitment to Nigeria’s renewable energy landscape, not only securing reliable energy for educational development but also contributing to long-term environmental and economic benefits,” Bello stated.
