The Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has begun installing closed-circuit television cameras in key examination halls as part of measures to tackle insecurity and reduce examination malpractice.
The rector of the institution, Sani Usman, disclosed this during an interview with journalists on Sunday following the 2025 resource inspection and accreditation visit by the National Board for Technical Education.
Usman explained that several classrooms now have solar-powered inverters to support the CCTV cameras, enhancing monitoring during examinations. He further revealed that the institution is working on a research project funded by TETFund to extend CCTV surveillance to areas outside the classrooms.
“We have incorporated CCTV cameras in some key classes because most of our classrooms now have solar inverters. I’m assuring you that we are also working on a TETFund research granted two years ago, which is almost completed, to enable installation of CCTV cameras outside the classrooms,” he said.
He noted that the initiative aims not only to address academic dishonesty but also to improve campus security.
The rector added that the NBTE inspection and accreditation exercise provides the opportunity to assess the progress made by the polytechnic over the past five years. He stated that the process helps ensure that the institution’s equipment, personnel, and resources are in line with current standards.
Usman confirmed that the NBTE team was at the polytechnic to accredit 78 academic programmes. “They have come, it has been done and it’s over now. We are going to await their findings,” he said.
In her remarks, Director of Polytechnic Programmes at NBTE, Fatima Umar, represented by board official Adesina Oluade, urged the school to address infrastructure and manpower gaps. She identified issues such as the absence of student handbooks, lack of academic journals, and unstable electricity as key areas needing improvement.
She emphasized that the accreditation process is intended to enhance quality assurance and assured the institution of a fair and transparent assessment.
