A Brazilian court has ruled that British singer Adele’s 2015 hit song *Million Years Ago* be removed from radio and streaming platforms globally over allegations of copyright infringement.
The decision, issued by Judge Victor Torres, follows a lawsuit filed by Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes, who accused Adele of copying his 1996 classic *Mulheres*, performed by Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila. Geraes alleges that Adele’s song borrows significant elements from his 1995 album and is demanding $160,000 in moral damages, lost royalties, and songwriting credits on the track.
To enforce compliance, the court has threatened the Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony and Universal Music Group with an $8,000 fine for each instance of non-compliance with the order.
Adele and her representatives have yet to respond publicly to the ruling. Meanwhile, the case highlights the increasing scrutiny on copyright issues in the global music industry.
