CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE, the regional subsidiary of CASIO Computer Co., Ltd., has launched a new calculator, the fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition, specifically designed for the Nigerian market. The unveiling took place on Thursday in Lagos during the CASIO Education Conference 2024, themed “Fostering Innovation and Problem-Solving in the Nigerian Classroom through the Use of Technology.”
The fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition combines basic calculation capabilities with advanced functions, including differential calculation, integrations, complex numbers, matrix and vector calculations, among others.
CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE Managing Director, Mr. Takashi Seimiya, commented on the launch: “Following the successful training program for 1,200 teachers on the usage of calculators with Inquiry-Based Learning, we are thrilled to deepen our footprint in Nigeria by introducing the fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition calculator. This calculator is a testament to our commitment to delivering the highest level of support and innovation to Nigerian educators and students by equipping them with the tools they need to excel in science, mathematics, and engineering in today’s world.”
Mr. Tayo Osiyemi, Executive Director of SKLD Integrated Services Limited, moderated a panel session during the unveiling, focusing on how technology can enhance learning in schools and impact society.
Mrs. Akinlade Olatomirin, Director of the Education Resource Centre at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, praised the collaboration with CASIO: “Our partnership with CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE has been remarkable and eye-opening. Equipping educators with skills in inquiry-based learning using the CASIO calculator has been inspiring and thrilling. The new non-programmable model is a long-awaited technology that educators and examining bodies must embrace.”
Students from various secondary schools participated in a Mathematical Quiz competition using the new CASIO calculators. The top three finalists were Chineye Oforma from Canterbury International School (third place), Bada AbdulSalam from Oriwu Senior Model College (second place), and Lawal Ismail from Falomo Senior High School (first place). They received cash prizes of N100,000, N250,000, and N500,000 respectively.
Prominent figures from the Nigerian education sector attended the event, including the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Lagos State, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, represented by Director of Education Resource Center, Mrs. Omolayo Akinlade Olatomorin; CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE Managing Director, Mr. Seimiya Takashi; Senior General Manager, Casio Japan, Mr. Tomoaki Sato; Director of Educational Planning, Research, and Development, Federal Ministry of Education Abuja, Mrs. Obianuju Anigbogu; and a representative from WAEC, Mr. Abdulmajid Olorunishola.
