In a move that has garnered widespread attention, a cleric from the Celestial Church of Christ has announced the suspension of offerings until fuel prices return to “normal.”
The cleric made the announcement during a recent sermon, acknowledging the financial strain on his congregation due to the current economic situation. “Don’t collect offerings from now, because of the situation of this country. For now, we are suspending offerings,” he stated.
He urged other pastors to follow his lead, highlighting the financial burden faced by churchgoers. “All pastors should take note of the situation in the country. Let us not collect offerings anymore because, for someone who comes to church by spending N1,000 on transportation and paying for their offering, the person might have to trek home. To pastors all over the world, stop collecting offerings for now,” he added.
The decision has sparked varied reactions on social media. One user, Mmesoma_sm, commented, “Trust me, I understand his concern, because the country is truly struggling now. But offering was never compulsory; it is a voluntary donation. Some people might still want to donate despite the situation.”
Another user, Odun_07, disagreed with the move, saying, “I am not in support of this. Offering and tithing in the Celestial Church is a spiritual exercise. My ‘shepherd’ usually says, ‘If you have, do it. And if you don’t have, don’t stress yourself at all. God understands.’”
