The home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria held Ghana’s Black Galaxies to a goalless draw in the first leg of their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier on Sunday in Accra.
Ghana dominated possession in the first half and nearly took the lead in the 15th minute, but Stephen Amankwoo’s effort narrowly missed the target. Despite their control, the Black Galaxies struggled to penetrate Nigeria’s resilient defense.
In the second half, the Super Eagles showed improvement, with Sikiru Alimi coming closest to breaking the deadlock when his shot struck the woodwork.
Both teams will reconvene for the decisive second leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday. The aggregate winner will secure a spot in CHAN 2024, set to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
The CHAN tournament is unique in its format, as it features players exclusively from domestic leagues in their respective countries.
