Mr. Chigozie Anene from Akwaeze in Anaocha Local Government Area has once again claimed the title of “Di Ji” at the 2024 Anambra State Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival, marking his second consecutive win. Anene, who also secured the top prize in 2023, received three million naira in cash, presented by Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo on behalf of the Anambra State Government.
In addition to the cash prize, Anene was gifted a tricycle by philanthropist Chief Christopher Ndubisi to aid in transporting his farm produce to market. The festival, held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, saw communities from the state’s 21 local government areas present their top yam farmers, with Anene emerging as the winner for growing the largest yam at the event.
The New Yam Festival celebrated Anambra’s rich harvest and featured a traditional yam storage exhibit known as “Oba Ji,” as well as vibrant cultural performances by masquerade troupes showcasing Igbo music, dance, and attire.
Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Entertainment, Comrade Don Onyenji, highlighted the festival’s role in promoting agriculture and honoring farmers, aligning with the government’s agricultural agenda. Traditional leaders, including Igwe Azuka Ngodi of Atani and Igwe Simeon Ikechukwu of Umumbo, praised Governor Soludo’s efforts in fostering agriculture to create jobs, boost revenue, and reduce food prices.
Mayor of Ihiala Local Government, Engr. Anayochukwu Orjiakor, lauded the festival’s educational and cultural value, urging people to support the state’s “Farm-To-Feed” initiative, hoping for increased agricultural engagement in coming years.
ABS spoke to masqueraders, including Mr. Martin Uwanakwa and Chief Obiajulu Edochie, who explained the cultural significance of masquerading in Igbo tradition. Each masquerade represented the highest and most respected groups from their respective communities, highlighting the festival’s cultural richness.
