Clean, Green and Sustainable Anambra: Communities, Groups, Stakeholders Key Into Soludo’s Environment Agenda

Earth Day celebration is an annual event that is celebrated globally by about 190 countries on Earth in other to raise awareness on how best to save the planet.

The Earth Day 2024, which is tagged ‘Planet Verse Plastic’, aims to bring attention to the serious issues of plastic pollution and how it harms the planet. Earth Day 2024, charges to end plastic for planetary health and demands a 60 percent reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.

The Government of Anambra state led by Prof.Chukwuma Soludo, CFR. since it’s inauguration had declared a state of emergency on environmental issues affecting the state.

The Governor had organized massive town hall Meeting tagged ‘ CLEAN GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE ANAMBRA: A COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION APPROACH’ through the Ministry of Environment. All stakeholders in Anambra state ranging from Various community leaders, Ndi Igwe, PGs, women leaders, youth leaders, religious bodies, Institutions, and companies gathered at the Prof.Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka to deliberate on how best to take ownership of the earth in which the Commissioner for Environment Anambra state, Engr Dr Felix Odimegwu declared that we should be active participants and not spectators in taking ownership of our environment. The turnout and outcome of the meeting were awesome.

Some activities in the state executed to save the earth include:
On PLANET VS PLASTIC: Anambra State has been at the forefront of bringing out sustainable programs on how to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics in the state.
Mr. Governor, Charles Soludo through the Ministry of Environment organized a PLASTIC WASTE CHALLENGE which was tagged PLASTIC WASTE SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT in line with the United Nations Development Programme on Environmental Sustainability.
Earlier on , the Governor of Anambra state, approved the formation of Anambra state waste Recyclers Association, the first of its kind in the state (ASWRA).

The Ministry of Environment in conjunction with ASWRA powered the plastic waste challenge. The challenge was aimed at removing plastic waste from the whole communities in Anambra, in which the community with the highest tones of plastic collections went home with a cheque of one million naira only.

The plastic sustainability summit ended with encomiums from stakeholders in Anambra state and Federal government in which the minister for Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal was a keynote speaker.

TREE PLANTING: There’s no gain saying the fact that every household in Anambra has developed a mindset of planting one or two trees in their house.
The solution Governor, shared about one million coconut and palm seedlings to Ndi Anambra.
In his words, “we will save the earth and make ndi Anambra millionaires during harvest.
Tree planting is very essential to mitigate climate change and creates atmosphere for healthy living.

In Anambra state today, individuals, cooperate
Bodies, Communities, Estate developers and Institutions have started taking ownership of their environment with the aim of achieving a Clean, Green, and sustainable Anambra agenda of Mr Governor in order to ensure an eco-friendly state.

As we celebrate Earth Day today, do everything possible to protect Earth for we only have one Earth.
