Comedian MC Morris Highlights Deep Divisions in Nigeria’s Comedy Industry

Canadian-based stand-up comedian Maurice Imadu, popularly known as MC Morris, has revealed significant divisions within Nigeria’s comedy industry. Speaking to *Sunday Scoop*, Morris attributed these divisions to senior colleagues who, instead of addressing industry issues, have contributed to its fragmentation.

“There are deep divisions in the industry, but things have not always been like this,” Morris said. “This is happening because there are senior colleagues who are not trying to fix the issues in the industry, but are rather dividing people. That is why many of them rush abroad to have shows, because they can no longer organize successful shows in Nigeria.”

He explained that these comedians seek opportunities abroad to earn dollars, which they then use to cover expenses back in Nigeria. However, Morris noted that their actions have weakened the local industry. “When they come here [to Canada], there is so much value for them. But, they cannot do standard shows because of limited financial capacity.”

Morris also mentioned an encounter with fellow comedian Basketmouth, who expressed his strong disapproval of AY, another prominent comedian. “I remember speaking with Basketmouth, and he stated that he has written his will, and that the first thing there is that if he dies today, AY must not attend his funeral,” Morris recalled.

He stressed that the internal strife has broader implications for the comedy industry and advised up-and-coming comedians to avoid these divisive factions and concentrate on honing their craft. Recalling his own experience, Morris noted that his association with AY led to Basketmouth distancing himself from him, illustrating the pressure on comedians to choose sides.

The ongoing divisions have resulted in a fragmented industry, making it challenging for comedians to collaborate and grow. Morris’s comments shed light on the need for unity and constructive leadership within Nigeria’s comedy scene.
