Commissioner Lauds Governor Soludo’s Impact on Anambra’s Security and Transportation Sector

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s accomplishments across Anambra State, recognizing his dedication to security and urging citizens to appreciate his efforts. Dr. Mefor highlighted the governor’s focus on safeguarding lives and property, especially during the festive season, at a stakeholders’ meeting on Rider’s Safety organized by the Ministry of Transport in Awka.

Dr. Mefor praised the Transport Commissioner’s efforts to align with the governor’s vision for a solution-oriented administration. He called for enhanced safety practices, urging tricycle (Keke) and motorcycle (Okada) operators to adopt defensive driving, practice patience, and ensure regular vehicle maintenance to minimize accidents.

Welcoming stakeholders, Commissioner for Transport Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike discussed the ministry’s use of technology to address challenges facing drivers, particularly Keke and Okada riders who serve remote areas. Sharing her experience from Orumbanasa in Anambra West LGA, Mrs. Igwebuike stressed the significance of these operators in the transportation system, emphasizing that their safety and development remain a priority for the ministry.

Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Security, Mr. JohnChris Chigbo, revealed new measures to strengthen transport sector security. He underscored the importance of Rider’s Permits, which all riders are encouraged to obtain as a vital safety measure for themselves and their passengers.

Representing the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra, Mr. Mogbo Oderah emphasized the necessity of using side-view mirrors to reduce accidents, citing human error as the primary cause of crashes. Ambassador Fidelis Nnadi, a consultant on motor-related services, echoed these sentiments, urging riders to use mirrors effectively for safety.

Mr. Chris Okeke, Head of Operations, highlighted the Rider’s Permit, issued by the Ministry of Transport through Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO). This permit provides essential security information about the rider, ensuring they are protected from harassment.

Okeke outlined key operational requirements for tricycles, including side-view mirrors, functional lights, and brake systems. He warned against using roof racks, extra lights, inappropriate horns, or other modifications. Additionally, he noted that Rider’s Permits would only be issued to individuals aged 18-70, with delivery riders restricted to carrying cargo instead of passengers and required to wear safety gear.

One participant, Mr. Emmanuel John Miracle, expressed gratitude for the meeting and recommended the inclusion of more security agencies in future gatherings to foster mutual understanding with riders.

The event was attended by stakeholders from the banking sector, FRSC, insurance companies, and various other organizations.
