Concerns Rise as Hypertension Prevalence Increases Amid Soaring Drug Prices

Medical experts have raised alarm over the growing prevalence of hypertension in Nigeria, coupled with the escalating costs of medications, which have left a significant number of affected individuals untreated despite the potentially life-threatening complications associated with the condition when left uncontrolled.

Physicians revealed that approximately half of the adult population in Nigeria diagnosed with hypertension, which accounts for over 35 percent, are not receiving treatment due to the financial burden associated with purchasing medications. This situation has led to an increase in hypertension-related complications, as patients struggle to afford essential drugs.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when the pressure in an individual’s blood vessels exceeds normal levels (140/90 mmHg or higher), according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The condition poses serious health risks, including heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, and heart failure, among others.

Despite its seriousness, hypertension is manageable through a combination of lifestyle modifications and medication. However, the economic challenges in Nigeria have exacerbated the burden of the disease, making it difficult for many patients to access essential medications.

Dr. Babawale Bello, a Consultant Nephrologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, attributed the rising prevalence of hypertension and its complications to the economic hardship facing Nigerians. He expressed concern that a significant portion of individuals with hypertension are unaware of their condition, posing a grave risk to their health.

Professor Ayodele Omotoso, President of the Nigerian Hypertension Society, highlighted the alarming increase in hypertension prevalence, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. He emphasized the detrimental impact of skyrocketing drug prices on patients’ ability to adhere to treatment, leading many to forgo medications altogether.

The soaring costs of medications have prompted some patients to seek cheaper alternatives, including herbal remedies, raising concerns among healthcare professionals about potential complications arising from untreated hypertension.

Experts urged Nigerians to prioritize regular health screenings and adherence to prescribed medications, emphasizing the importance of managing hypertension to prevent debilitating complications. They underscored the need for affordable healthcare solutions to ensure that individuals with hypertension can access essential medications without financial barriers.

As the burden of hypertension continues to grow in Nigeria, healthcare stakeholders called for concerted efforts to address the underlying economic challenges and improve access to affordable healthcare services for all segments of the population.
