COOU Department of Nursing Science Hosts 2024 Nursing Week and Healthy Living Lecture Series

The Department of Nursing Science at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, recently convened its annual Nurses Week alongside a Parents Interactive Forum and Healthy Living Lecture Series, featuring a keynote address by Mrs. Nonye Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike.

Under the theme “Promoting Healthy Living Through Nursing Care Practice,” the event unfolded at the university premises in Igbariam, advocating for holistic approaches to healthcare.

Mrs. Nonye Soludo, Founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, emphasized the importance of healthy living, particularly through natural foods, in combating non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension. She expressed willingness to collaborate with COOU’s Department of Nursing Science to enhance the well-being of Anambra residents.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Omenugha, underscored the altruistic nature of nursing, describing it as a calling to serve humanity and alleviate suffering. She highlighted the department’s challenges, including limited capacity and infrastructure constraints, while advocating for partnerships with foreign universities to broaden students’ horizons through mobility programs.

Dr. Ada Ibekwe, Head of the Department of Nursing Science, commended nurses for their dedicated service and acknowledged Mrs. Soludo’s presence, as well as the Acting Vice-Chancellor’s support for the department’s growth.

In a goodwill message, Commissioner for Women and Social Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, encouraged nursing students to remain focused, assuring them of capable leadership under the Vice-Chancellor’s guidance.

During the Parents Interactive session, attendees addressed departmental challenges, with some making financial contributions to support its development.

The ceremony featured presentations of fresh fruits and sanitary pads by Mrs. Soludo, a Florence Nightingale display, and cultural dances, underscoring the celebration of nursing excellence and healthy living advocacy.
