The management and students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, have renewed their commitment to addressing gender-based violence, discrimination, and sexual harassment within the institution. This was affirmed during an advocacy visit by the non-governmental organization, Alliances for Africa (AfA), in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Studies.
Prof. Mathias Ananti, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of COOU, represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, during the visit. He emphasized that gender-based violence and harassment are “very sensitive matters” requiring collective action. He noted that the culture of silence, fear of stigmatization, and the lack of robust data hinder the fight against these issues in educational institutions.
Ananti assured that COOU has a zero-tolerance policy towards gender-based violence and sexual harassment. He highlighted the university’s commitment to creating a safer academic environment by institutionalizing the Centre for Gender-based Studies to support stronger policies and advocacy mechanisms.
Blessing Duru, Programmes Director at AfA, stressed that despite existing policies, gender-based violence continues to disrupt academic life in Nigerian universities, including COOU. She urged the institution to establish its Centre for Gender-based Studies, implement clear reporting channels, and ensure accountability to tackle the issue effectively.
AfA pledged ongoing support to COOU and other universities in Nigeria through capacity building, strategic planning, and policy development to combat gender-based violence and harassment.
