COOU VC, Omenugha, Team Pay Courtesy Call On Environment Commissioner

— Mull Plans to Host Climate Change Summit, Tree Planting Awareness

The Acting-Vice chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha and her team Thursday, paid a courtesy visit on the Environment Commissioner in the state, Engr. Dr Felix Odimegwu at his office, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, Anambra State.

Speaking during the visit, Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha informed that the State University has set a roadmap with the mantra and administrative agenda of “Values, Viability and Visibility” which is committed to creating sustainable, responsible and actionable steps towards green, healthier and eco-friendly environment in Igbariam and Uli campuses of the university respectively.

She opined that the institution and it’s governing body have vowed to be Environment friendly, by being a solution provider through their various programmes which include: Advancing Environment and climate studies, tree planting initiatives and regenerative agriculture.

Responding in high spirit, the Commissioner, Dr Felix Odimegwu welcomed Prof Omenugha, stating that he is overly impressed with the environmental moves being championed by the University; as Tree planting is one simple, natural and effective technique that will help curb the overwhelming erosion menace that have taken a large chunk of our land mass here in Anambra state. He mentioned that the state launched Anambra Tree Planting Day in June 2024.

Dr Odimegwu noted that the programme which is in line with Governor Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s quest for a clean, green, healthy and sustainable Anambra will be marked ever year. He also disclosed that the recently held Anambra tree planting and urban forestation initiative by the ministry of Environment has earned Certificate of appreciation and recognition from United Nations UNEP.

He appealed to the State university management to imbibe the habit of proper waste recycling and upcycling. He pointed out that waste itself is wealth when used and harnessed properly.

In addition, Prof Omenugha used the opportunity to inform that the varsity will host a climate change summit and tree planting awareness campaign on July 17th, 2024. “The 100,000 palm tree donated by His Excellency Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo to the university will further cement the school quest to plant one million trees in the next five years”, she said.
