Dr. Joe Akabuike, Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) in Amaku, Awka, has raised concerns over the N19.5 million monthly electricity bills issued by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). Dr. Akabuike stated that the hospital is struggling to meet these financial demands.
Speaking to ABS in Awka, Dr. Akabuike acknowledged that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s investments in the health sector have begun to yield positive results, significantly improving the state’s health indices. He praised Governor Soludo’s extensive support and interventions across primary, secondary, and tertiary health institutions, describing these efforts as pivotal.
Dr. Akabuike highlighted ongoing construction and renovations at general hospitals, the refurbishment of primary healthcare centers in every political ward, and the comprehensive support provided to COOUTH as evidence of the Governor’s commitment to addressing the health needs of Anambra residents.
Under Governor Soludo’s administration, COOUTH has undergone significant transformations in both infrastructure and service delivery. Notable improvements include the implementation of the Service Compact with All Nigerians (SERVICOM), E-medicine initiatives, the construction of a Consultant Lounge, the renovation of the Dental Department, and the electrification of the hospital to ensure 24-hour service delivery.
Despite these advancements, Dr. Akabuike expressed concern over the hospital’s exorbitant electricity bills and the lack of access roads, which remain significant challenges. He also commended the Governor for the recent employment of approximately 1,000 health workers, particularly those assigned to Primary Healthcare Centres, enhancing the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services in the state.
Dr. Akabuike urged Ndi Anambra to prioritize their health needs and noted that the state government’s efforts to upgrade COOUTH are set to improve service delivery for all residents.
