Dangote Group Invests $280M in CNG Technology to Support Nigeria’s Clean Energy Transition

The Dangote Group has announced a $280 million investment in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure to support President Bola Tinubu’s clean energy initiative. In a statement released on Sunday, the group emphasized its commitment to mitigating climate change, promoting low-carbon alternatives, and boosting Nigeria’s energy efficiency.

In alignment with Tinubu’s directive to expand Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure, the initiative includes distributing one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles. Dangote Cement is integrating this policy by transitioning its fleet to CNG, with a target to run most of its trucks on CNG by mid-2026.

Dangote Cement’s Group Managing Director, Arvind Pathak, stated that the company has already received 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks and expects an additional 1,600 by year-end. This transition is supported by the development of a CNG fueling station at Obajana, with a second station underway in Ibese to accommodate the fleet.

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, highlighted the investment’s alignment with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060. He expressed optimism about President Tinubu’s leadership in energy efficiency, underscoring the private sector’s role in achieving cleaner energy goals and bolstering Nigeria’s energy independence.

As the largest operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria, Dangote Group’s move reflects a strategic step towards a greener future under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
