Don Jazzy Reveals What Inspired His Journey into Music Production

Nigerian record producer and music executive, Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has opened up about the inspiration behind his rise to become one of Africa’s most influential producers.

During a recent episode of the ‘On The Grind’ podcast, the Mavin Records boss shared that his deep love for music was the driving force behind his decision to pursue music production. Known for his exceptional talent with multiple musical instruments, Don Jazzy highlighted his proficiency, particularly with drums.

“I just went in [to production] and never looked back,” Don Jazzy said, reflecting on his journey. “I started with percussion, then moved to the jazz drum. From there, I learned the bass guitar, and later the piano. When I was in London, I realized that I wanted to be a producer.”

In a lighter moment, the music executive also mentioned that his passion for drumming is so intense that he often drums in unusual situations, even during intimate moments. “I literally drum all the time, even during sex,” he said, humorously adding, “I can even drum on a woman’s buttocks if I get the inspiration for a beat at that time.”

Don Jazzy, who once lived in the studio with fellow producers Altims and Baby Fresh for two years, began his career in the UK, working with JJC and the 419 Squad. He later co-founded Mo’ Hits Records with D’banj in 2004, becoming the label’s in-house producer. After the split of Mo’ Hits, he founded Mavin Records in 2012, where he now serves as CEO and lead producer.

His career highlights also include a stint as an in-house producer for Kanye West’s GOOD Music label from 2011 to 2013.
