The Economic Community of West African States Commission (ECOWAS) has dispatched a team of forty individuals to observe the legislative and regional elections in Togo. The deployment, sanctioned by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, aligns with Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
Scheduled for Monday, April 29, 2024, the mission aims to provide support to Togo and ensure the integrity of the electoral process. Led by former Vice-President of The Gambia, Mrs. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, the team comprises ambassadors from ECOWAS member states, representatives from the ECOWAS Court of Justice and Parliament, civil society organizations, media professionals, and election observation experts from the West African region.
This deployment follows recommendations from a pre-election fact-finding mission conducted from April 15 to 20, 2024, which assessed the preparatory phases of the elections in Togo.
During their tenure in Togo, the observation mission will engage with key stakeholders in the electoral process and closely monitor the voting procedures. This initiative underscores ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting democracy and good governance across the region.
