Edo PDP Governorship Candidate Denies Involvement in Shaibu’s Impeachment

Asue Ighodalo, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has refuted allegations of his involvement in the impeachment of former deputy governor Philip Shaibu.

In a statement released by his media team on Monday, Ighodalo dismissed Shaibu’s accusations as baseless, asserting that he had no hand in the impeachment process. The statement came in response to a video circulating online, where Shaibu accused Ighodalo of sponsoring his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Shaibu was impeached on April 8, 2024, by the state House of Assembly on charges of perjury and leaking government secrets, amid escalating tensions between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki. The rift between Shaibu and Obaseki intensified when the governor opposed Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambition and instead backed Ighodalo.

Ighodalo emphasized that Shaibu should not hold him responsible for his impeachment, stating unequivocally that he had no involvement in the process. He labeled Shaibu’s claims as unfounded attempts to tarnish his reputation and divert attention from substantive issues.

The PDP candidate urged the public to treat Shaibu’s allegations with skepticism, emphasizing his commitment to conducting a campaign focused on addressing issues rather than engaging in distractions.
