The Edo State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) inaugurated its caretaker committee on Friday. Appointed by the party’s National Working Committee, the committee is chaired by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, with Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe serving as secretary. Other members include Harrison Omagbon, Fidel Igenegbale, Chris Nehikhare, Tony Anenih Jr., Archbishop Anthony Okosun, Segun Saiki, Adezat Ibrahim, and Augustine Edosomwan.

During the inauguration in Benin City, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed his commitment to reclaiming what he described as a “stolen mandate” in the recent September 21 gubernatorial election, alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC) manipulated the election results. He called for unity among PDP leaders, emphasizing the importance of presenting a unified front as the party contests the election results through legal channels.

Governor Obaseki stated, “Our mandate was stolen in broad daylight. We have evidence and are determined to recover it. We must stay focused and patient, as our democracy is bound by laws and procedures.” He also criticized the APC for proceeding with a governor’s inauguration without official involvement from his administration, describing it as an “illegality.”

As the tribunal hearing approaches, Governor Obaseki urged PDP members to stay vigilant and maintain communication with local leaders and the public, especially with the tribunal proceedings set to commence in December. He also raised concerns over the APC’s financial practices, claiming that funds meant for development projects were being diverted.

Dr. Asue Ighodalo, PDP’s candidate in the September election, also addressed the audience, stressing the importance of remaining resolute in the fight to restore their “stolen mandate.” He noted that legal preparations are underway, with both parties expected to file replies by mid-November, leading up to pre-hearings and a formal hearing by the end of November.

Both Obaseki and Ighodalo reaffirmed their dedication to preserving democracy in Nigeria, framing the battle as not just a local issue but one crucial to the nation’s democratic principles.
