The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged murder of Glory Adekolure, a recent graduate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), by unidentified assailants.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the development in a telephone conversation with PUNCH Metro on Tuesday.
Adekolure reportedly went to UNIBEN for her final clearance on June 13, 2024, but her body was later discovered near her residence. Her brother, identified on X.com as @softbaba, has publicly demanded justice for her, stating she was attacked while returning home from school.
According to @softbaba, Adekolure was beaten, raped, and murdered in the Iyowa community of Benin, the Edo State capital, and her body was found near their house. He took to X.com on Monday, appealing to Nigerians and the police for help in uncovering the truth behind her death.
In his posts, he wrote, “Justice for my younger sister Adekolure Idowu Glory, who was raped and killed in Iyowa community, Benin, Edo State on her way back from school (UNIBEN). She went for her clearance and her corpse was dropped close to her mother’s house. Help us seek justice for my kid sister that just graduated from the University of Benin in April 2024 and was processing her projects and clearance when she was raped to death on June 13, 2024, at just 22 years old.”
He further detailed that her lifeless body was deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) mortuary on June 15, 2024, with the assistance of the Nigeria Police from Ekhiadolor Division. “She was beaten, raped, and killed. Please Nigerians, come to my rescue. My mum can’t hold herself. Please everyone should help me to retweet and tag those that can help me get justice,” he added.
In response to inquiries, Nwabuzor confirmed that the police had initiated an investigation. However, he refrained from disclosing whether any arrests had been made, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation.
“We have commenced an investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances behind her death. Because of the nature of the incident and to avoid jeopardising the ongoing investigation, I can’t disclose if any arrests have been made. We will continue to investigate and update the public as developments occur,” Nwabuzor stated.
When contacted, UNIBEN’s spokesperson, Benedicta Ehanire, said she was unaware of the incident but would seek information from the Dean of Students. “I am just learning about the incident. I will inquire from the Dean of Students,” she said.
