The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of six individuals for internet fraud-related offenses. The convicts—Idris Muhammed, Ismail Temitope Mustapha, Oyekola Odunayo, Anthony Sylvester Stephen, Timilehin Adeniyi, and Olayiwola Ayomide Abdulmalik—were sentenced by Justices Sulaiman Akanbi and Adebayo Yusuf of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.
The EFCC’s head of media and publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the convictions in a statement. The convicts had defrauded various individuals by impersonating others online, obtaining money fraudulently through cash apps and gift cards.
Idris Muhammed was sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of a N100,000 fine, while Ismail Temitope Mustapha received one year with a N100,000 fine. Other convicts were handed varying sentences, with some ordered to pay fines and perform community service. The court also ordered the forfeiture of their phones and restitution of the illegally obtained funds to the Federal Government.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of the EFCC to combat internet fraud across Nigeria.
