The campaign to persuade President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has gained momentum with visits from South East traditional rulers and archbishops to his detention facility.
Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimako, revealed that the discreet visit was initiated by the region’s governors, who have been negotiating with the Federal Government for Kanu’s release. The visit aimed to convince Kanu to accept the stringent conditions set by the government for his freedom.
Ejimako disclosed that the emissaries would soon meet with the state governors to relay the details of their discussion with Kanu. Following this, the governors are expected to meet with President Tinubu to present Kanu’s response for potential implementation.
“With particular reference to the intervention of South-East governors, myself and three high delegates from the Joint Body of Southeast Archbishops and Traditional Rulers met with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu yesterday at the DSS for over two hours,” Ejimako stated. “The delegation comprised Archbishop Chibuzor Opoko, Archbishop David Onuoha, and Dr. Uju Agomoh. The meeting was highly fruitful because this body is interfacing with SE governors on freeing Kanu and other related issues.”
Ejimako added that His Royal Majesty Dr. Nnaemeka Achebe (Obi of Onitsha), who leads the delegation, will report back to the South East governors with Kanu’s feedback. Subsequently, a meeting between President Tinubu and the South East governors is anticipated.
Ejimako emphasized that his advocacy against Kanu’s continued detention and trial is based on existing judicial pronouncements and legal principles opposing his rendition, detention, and trial.
