The family of Nigeria’s former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, has awarded scholarships to indigent students from Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The beneficiaries received the scholarships at the maiden edition of the Ideoko Memorial Scholarship programme, held at the residence of the late Vice President in Oko.
One of his sons, Architect Ken Ekwueme, explained that the initiative was established in honour of their late father, who valued education and achieved his successes through it.
He revealed that the best ten students in the screening examination set by the foundation were selected, with the scholarship covering tuition, hostel, matriculation, registration, and other fees from their first to final year.
The Scholarship Consultant, Mrs Pauline Ogbo, informed the beneficiaries that maintaining the scholarship required a certain CGPA.
Speakers at the event, including Sir Isaiah Ezezika, Professor Henry Aginam, Dr Emma Udeoye, and the Vice President General of Oko Town Union, Chief Sunday Nwafor, described the scholarship as a golden opportunity and encouraged the students to study hard and stay focused.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Miss Margret Nwankwo thanked the Ekwueme family for the opportunity, saying it would ease the financial burden on their families and promised to make them proud.
The presentation of scholarship documents to the beneficiaries by the Ekwueme family marked the highlight of the event.
