The Enu-Avomimi quarter of Enugwu-Ukwu has issued a distress call to authorities following a surge in gully erosion endangering lives and properties in the community.
A recent torrential downpour wreaked havoc, resulting in substantial property damage worth millions of naira and placing over 31 buildings in imminent peril along the eroded edges.
Upon inspection by ABS News, the severity of the erosion became apparent, measuring approximately 60 meters deep and 60 meters wide, posing an existential threat to the community.
Speaking on behalf of the villagers, Mr. Christopher Onyekwu expressed grave concerns over the community’s future, warning of the impending risk of complete annihilation if urgent intervention is not undertaken. He implored the State and Federal governments, as well as international agencies, to intervene promptly.
Attributing the erosion to redirected flood channels from neighboring communities, residents, including Chiefs Paul Mbonu, Emmanuel Okponyia, and Nwabuze Umejiakabugu, recounted years of living in constant fear as the erosion steadily encroached upon homes and even a local hospital.
Among those deeply impacted is Mrs. Rita Edozo, an octogenarian widow, who recounted futile attempts by her late husband to stem the erosion’s advance through palliative measures. She appealed for assistance to enable her family to relocate to safer accommodations, as parts of her home succumb to the relentless erosion.
