Experts Debunk Myths Around Sexual Positions and Conception, Stress Importance of Family Planning Methods

Leading gynaecologists have dispelled the popular belief that certain sexual positions can enhance the likelihood of conception, clarifying that there is no scientific basis for such claims.

Renowned maternal health specialists, including Professor Ernest Orji from Obafemi Awolowo University, have confirmed that any position can result in pregnancy if a healthy sperm reaches the cervix. Prof. Orji explained that, regardless of the position, a woman can conceive once viable sperm reaches the vagina and travels to the cervix, as long as there are no physiological barriers, such as a blocked cervix.

Dr. Stanley Egbogu, a consultant gynaecologist, noted that sexual position is relevant only when discussing sex or gender selection, not for influencing conception success. He further explained that effective contraception relies on established family planning methods rather than any specific sexual position.

The experts also highlighted that common methods like withdrawal have a high failure rate due to the presence of sperm in pre-ejaculatory fluid. Dr. Egbogu emphasized that proven family planning options—such as contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices, implants, and condoms—remain the reliable choice for managing pregnancy.
