Eye Expert Advises on Safe Reading Practices and Regular Eye Checks

Dr. Azeez Amuda, a renowned eye specialist also known as Baba Oloju, has advised Nigerians to avoid marathon reading to protect their eye health. Speaking at a health talk organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara Council, Amuda recommended taking a two-minute break every hour of continuous reading to rest the eyes.

Dr. Amuda specifically urged journalists to have their eyes tested at least once a year and to avoid seeking treatment from unqualified practitioners or chemists. He highlighted the importance of proper eye care, noting, “It’s like someone running a race for two hours non-stop versus one who takes two-minute breaks at intervals—who will be more exhausted?”

He also warned against self-prescribing eye medications and relying on unverified remedies. Amuda cited instances where incorrect home treatments, like applying breast milk for conjunctivitis in newborns, can lead to severe complications or even blindness.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for monitoring blood pressure during eye treatment, as high blood pressure can exacerbate eye problems.
