The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday the arrest of lawmaker Alex Mascot Ikwechegh following an alleged assault on a driver in Abuja. The Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that Ikwechegh was taken into custody and is currently at the Maitama Police Station for questioning.
According to Adeh, the incident was reported by the alleged victim, a cab driver named Stephen Abuwatseya. Preliminary investigations reveal that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute reportedly broke out over the method of delivery, during which Abuwatseya was allegedly physically assaulted.
The statement from the FCT Police noted the lawmaker’s dismissive attitude towards the incident. “After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ demonstrating a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.”
Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The FCT Police Command emphasized its commitment to conducting a fair inquiry and assured that appropriate legal action would follow based on the findings.
