The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an upward review of various allowances for public service officers, including Duty Tour Allowance, transport allowances, uniform allowances, and overtime allowances.
The decision was made during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Establishment (NCE), chaired by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack. The NCE, Nigeria’s top policymaking body for public service matters, comprises Heads of Service from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Prior to the meeting, a two-day technical session was led by the Permanent Secretary of the Service Policies and Strategies Office, involving permanent secretaries and directors from all states and the FCT.
During the council meeting, 32 memoranda were reviewed, with six approved, eight stepped down, six rejected, seven referred to the Standing Committee, one noted, and three slated for re-presentation. Among the approved resolutions was the adjustment of allowances to better reflect current economic realities and ensure a more comprehensive Scheme of Service.
The report stated: *“An upward review of rates of allowances paid to officers in the Public Service and a comprehensive review of the Schemes of Service to reflect the Council’s approvals.”*
This move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of public service officers across Nigeria.
