In a bid to reduce transportation costs, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has signed an agreement with the Airport Taxi Operators at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to convert 800 vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This initiative, according to PCNGI, will lead to a 30% reduction in taxi fares to the airport.
The signing ceremony on Tuesday highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a cleaner, more affordable fuel alternative. Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director and Chief Executive of PCNGI, represented by Programme Execution Coordinator Mr. Folarin Oworo, assured the public that the plan to convert one million vehicles to CNG is on track.
“The airport taxi operators have around 800 vehicles. Once we achieve 50% conversion, which is about 400 vehicles, the 30% fare reduction will be applied immediately,” Oluwagbemi explained. He added that a “red card” displaying prices and discounts will be available in each vehicle, with fare reductions adjusted based on the destination.
Addressing safety concerns, Oluwagbemi emphasized that CNG cylinders used by PCNGI are bulletproof and certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), ensuring they are safe and reliable when properly installed. He warned that unauthorized conversions with non-standard cylinders could pose risks.
Mr. Aliyu Abdulaziz Aliyu, spokesperson for the Airport Taxi Operators, expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that the free conversion will make airport transportation more affordable for passengers.
