Federal Lawmaker Champions Climate Change Awareness for Idemili Stakeholders

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, in collaboration with Hon. Uchenna Okonkwo, Member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, organized a sensitization programme on climate change for local stakeholders.

The event, themed “Climate Adaptation/Resilient Peace Building Awareness,” aimed to raise awareness about climate change, a pressing global issue impacting the environment and society. It provided a platform for participants to discuss strategies for mitigating climate impacts and developing resilience within their communities.

Hon. Okonkwo, represented by Chief Romeo Anyisia, emphasized the event’s purpose to educate on alternative conflict resolution methods and climate risk mitigation.

Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, the traditional ruler of Obosi, lauded the initiative’s timing, noting its relevance amidst societal crises like insecurity and hardship, and stressed the importance of peace in addressing environmental challenges.

The keynote speaker, Deputy Director of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Mr. Chukwuma Mba, discussed “Adaptation in Idemili North and South on the Environment.” He highlighted climate change’s significant impacts on livelihoods and urged mindful actions towards the environment.

Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, represented by Chief Anyisia, Engineer Paul Okoye, President General of Ideani, and Mrs. Amaka Uzodimma praised the initiative, calling for federal support in food security and enhanced security networks.

Event organizers Kubura Shedu, Chukwubike Okoye, and Deborah Ogbeka described the program as one of Hon. Okonkwo’s many grassroots initiatives, aiming to educate rural populations on ecosystem reclamation. They encouraged stakeholders to share their newfound knowledge within their communities, promising the program’s sustainability.

The event, attended by Presidents General of various Idemili communities, concluded with the presentation of certificates of attendance to participants.
