Federal Ministry Unveils Draft Policy to Position Nigeria as Global Tourism Leader

The Federal Ministry of Tourism has introduced a Draft National Tourism Policy, marking a major step towards positioning Nigeria as a global leader in the tourism sector. The Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John, announced this development during a virtual meeting with stakeholders on Saturday in Abuja.

According to the minister, the policy represents a significant advance for Nigeria’s tourism industry. It was developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and other key stakeholders.

Mrs. Ade-John emphasized that the policy is a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to harness the vast potential of its tourism sector. The document aligns Nigeria’s tourism initiatives with global standards and sustainable practices, focusing on sustainable tourism, community engagement, and diversification of tourism products. These elements are seen as essential for driving economic growth, creating jobs, and preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

“This draft policy is a testament to our collective dedication to repositioning Nigeria’s tourism sector as a key driver of economic diversification,” said Mrs. Ade-John. “We are committed to implementing frameworks that ensure accountability, foster green initiatives, and empower women and youths.”

The policy adopts a comprehensive approach, addressing critical areas such as digital transformation and synergies with the aviation sector. The draft is expected to be finalized in October, with a presentation to the Federal Executive Council planned for November.

The minister highlighted the importance of stakeholder inclusivity throughout the policy development process, ensuring that the perspectives of all relevant sectors were considered. The next steps will involve further consultations and validation to refine the document before its implementation.

The meeting included participation from top government officials, private sector representatives, and key industry stakeholders, all of whom expressed a commitment to continuous collaboration to ensure the successful realization of the policy’s objectives.
