The Federal Government of Nigeria has called on universities and polytechnics to focus more on technical education and foster innovation to enhance the productivity of their graduates and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Oluwemimo Osanipin, highlighted the importance of training students to be problem solvers who can add value to Nigeria’s production chain. His comments came after the NADDC inspected an electric tricycle developed by the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Mukail Akinde, announced plans to establish a mini assembly plant for the tricycle’s mass production, noting that it was made with locally sourced components. The FG has expressed support for this initiative, emphasizing the need for educational institutions to strengthen the technical aspects of their curricula.
Osanipin stressed the importance of innovation in education, particularly in fields like mechatronics and mechanical engineering. He also pointed out the challenges local manufacturers face, including high production costs and limited funding, which make local products more expensive than imported alternatives.
By focusing on technical education and innovation, Nigerian institutions can equip graduates with the skills needed to create job opportunities and drive the country’s economic development.
