The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has made a significant announcement, appointing Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The former international footballer clinched the prestigious position, prevailing over Emmanuel Amuneke in the selection process.

Finidi George’s journey to the top coaching role with the Super Eagles began with his tenure as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro, which lasted for 20 months. Following Peseiro’s departure after guiding the team to a runner-up finish in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Cote d’Ivoire in 2023, George assumed the role of interim coach. He demonstrated his capabilities during this interim period, overseeing the team in two friendly matches held in Morocco last month.

With his formal appointment as head coach, Finidi George faces an immediate challenge: steering the Super Eagles to victory in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. The matches are scheduled to take place in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively, within the next five weeks.

These upcoming fixtures hold immense importance for the Super Eagles, as they currently occupy third place in Group C of the African campaign, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa. As George assumes his new role, all eyes will be on him to lead the team to success and secure vital wins in the quest for World Cup qualification.
