Finidi George Begins Tenure at Rivers United with First Training Session

Rivers United’s new coach, Finidi George, has begun his tenure by leading his first training session on Monday at the Garden City Sports Complex in Port Harcourt as the club starts preparations for the 2024/25 season.

The 53-year-old, appointed last Wednesday following his resignation as the head coach of the Super Eagles, was seen actively involved in the session, giving instructions to the players and consulting with his technical crew, including coach Evans Ogenyi, who managed the team until the end of the last season.

However, Finidi does not yet have the complete squad, with the club still negotiating with around 13 out-of-contract players and attempting to recruit new talent. Among the potential recruits are Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie and his teammate Divine Nwachukwu, Doma United keeper Kingdom Osayi, and Sporting Lagos striker Jonathan Alukwu.

Some out-of-contract players at Rivers United include goalkeeper Abiodun Akande, captain Nyima Nwagua, and Kazie Enyinnaya.

Finidi, who signed a two-year deal, aims to return the team to continental competitions next season. Last season, Rivers United participated in the CAF Confederation Cup but were eliminated in the quarter-finals and finished eighth in the NPFL with 53 points.
