Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, wasted no time addressing a major challenge as he visited the university’s Physiotherapy Department at the Okofia, Nnewi campus, which was recently devastated by fire.
The fire, which broke out on Thursday, November 21, caused extensive damage to the department, completely destroying the building that housed the laboratory, offices, and classrooms.
During his visit, Prof. Ikechebelu, who assumed office recently, was accompanied by key university officials, including Prof. Gerald Ndigwe, Provost of the College, as well as deans, heads of departments, and students. He conducted a thorough inspection of the affected areas and engaged directly with staff and students to better understand the challenges posed by the incident.
Expressing deep concern, the Acting Vice-Chancellor assured the university community of immediate action to address the fallout. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain a top priority. We will expedite efforts to rebuild and implement measures to prevent future occurrences,” he stated.
The staff and students, visibly relieved by the visit, commended Prof. Ikechebelu for his quick response and expressed optimism about the rehabilitation process.
Meanwhile, investigations have begun to determine the cause of the fire, with the aim of preventing a recurrence.
