First Female SUG President of UNICAL Sparks Debate with Appointment of 50 Aides

Blessing Alims, the first female president of the Student Union Government (SUG) at the University of Calabar, has ignited discussions with her recent decision to appoint 50 aides. In a letter dated August 1, 2024, Alims announced the appointments, stating that they were made after a thorough evaluation of each individual’s conduct, credibility, enthusiasm, transparency, and commitment to advancing the SUG’s goals.

The appointments span various roles, including Special Assistants on politics, sports, religious duties, media, and other areas, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the SUG administration.

Following the announcement, the decision was met with criticism online, with many questioning the necessity of such a large number of aides. In response, Alims defended her decision in a statement issued through her press secretary, Chinenye Madueke, on August 7, 2024.

In the statement titled *”Addressing Concerns on Appointments,”* Alims explained, “The Students’ Union Government is responsible for the welfare and progress of our entire university community. Just as a single tree does not make a forest, effective governance for a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. A diverse and capable team is essential to successfully implement our initiatives.”

Alims, a student of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution in the Department of Political Science, assumed office as SUG President on June 14, 2024, marking a historic moment as the first female to hold the position at the university.
