Flood Warning: Anambra Environment Commissioner, Odimegwu Calls on Residents in Riverine Communities to Move To Upland

The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), NIMET and NEMA recently identified 31 states including Anambra as states with high risk areas for significant flood impact in their 2024 national flood outlook.

The affected Local government areas includes; Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Awka North, Idemmili South, Ekwusigo and Ihiala respectively.

Reacting to the recent development at Awka, The Proactive Environment Commissioner stated that the Soludo-led government has already started making containment plans ahead of the incident including engaging in collaborations with the federal governments, local authorities and global partners.

Dr Odimegwu called on those residing in the afore-mentioned flood prone communities in the state to prepare to move upland or designated holding facilities.

He also urged leaderships of churches, communities to help those affected residents find footings pending when the flood subsides.
