Property worth millions of naira has been destroyed following a severe flood that impacted a hostel at the University of Ibadan. The incident occurred on Friday, affecting several students residing in Awo Hall, one of the university’s hostels.
Reports indicate that Blocks A, B, and C of Awo Hall were significantly impacted, with approximately 16 rooms on the underground floor completely submerged. Students’ belongings, including important documents, books, foodstuffs, laptops, and other valuables, were seen floating in the water.
The Students’ Union (SU) has confirmed the flooding incident, with President Bolaji Aweda and Public Relations Officer Olumide Omotayo issuing a joint statement. They reported that the SU has alerted university management about the situation, prompting a response.
In light of the incident, the university management has directed the Works and Maintenance Department, along with the University Student Lodgings Bureau (USLB), to take immediate action. These departments are set to conduct inspections and work towards a permanent solution to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The SU also announced that affected students would be temporarily relocated to other rooms and blocks within the hostel.
“We understand the distress this has caused and want to reassure the residents that the Union is actively involved in addressing the situation,” the statement said.
The SU emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal and the maintenance of drainage systems to mitigate future flooding risks. They expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of all affected students during this challenging time.
