Former Aviation Minister Faces Charges Over Alleged Misappropriation

Former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Abubakar Sirika, is set to appear before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja today to defend allegations of misappropriation of public funds, particularly relating to the failed national airline project, Air Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dragged Sirika, along with his daughter, son-in-law, and their company, Al Buraq Global Investment Limited, before the court to explain their involvement in diverting funds earmarked for aviation projects during Sirika’s tenure as minister under the Buhari administration.

The charges against the defendants include allegations of using their positions to confer unfair advantages, criminal breach of trust, holding private interests in contracts awarded on account of public service, and possession of proceeds of criminal conduct.

The EFCC’s investigation into Sirika’s activities, particularly regarding the Nigeria Air project and contracts for Katsina Airport, led to his temporary release on administrative bail last month.

Although the duration of the case remains uncertain, Sirika, a prominent figure in the Buhari administration, becomes one of the first high-ranking officials to face charges of alleged corruption under the EFCC’s scrutiny.
