Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe, a former member of the House of Representatives representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency, has expressed appreciation to the National Assembly for suspending the recently introduced cybersecurity levy.
In a statement to the press in Awka, Hon. Obidigwe acknowledged the significance of cybersecurity measures but criticized the timing of the levy, citing the prevailing economic challenges facing Nigerians.
The former lawmaker commended the National Assembly for responding to the concerns of citizens, noting that the implementation of the cybersecurity levy would exacerbate the hardships faced by many Nigerians struggling to afford basic necessities.
He urged the federal government to swiftly implement policies and programs aimed at alleviating economic hardship, stressing the urgent need to address the alarming levels of hunger and frustration among citizens.
Hon. Obidigwe also called for constructive dialogue between the administration led by President Bola Tinubu and organized labor to negotiate a living wage that would enable Nigerian workers to cope with the country’s hyperinflation.
The decision to suspend the cybersecurity levy comes in the wake of widespread condemnation from Nigerians following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive to deduct 0.5% from every online transaction for cybersecurity purposes, with the funds to be deposited in the National Security Adviser’s account.
