FRSC Warns Motorists After 16 Burned to Death in Ondo State Road Crash

The Ondo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists, urging them to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent tragic road accidents. The warning came in the wake of a fatal accident on the Ondo-Ore Expressway at Ajue community in Odigbo Local Government Area on Tuesday night, where at least 16 people lost their lives.

Confirming the incident, Ondo Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Ibitoye Samuel, disclosed that the accident involved an 18-passenger Toyota Hiace bus and a truck. The vehicles reportedly collided head-on, causing the bus to catch fire and resulting in the death of 16 of its occupants. Three passengers miraculously survived the crash but sustained injuries.

Mr. Ibitoye attributed the accident to speeding and wrongful overtaking by the vehicles involved. He noted that the crash occurred around 8 pm, with rescue operations continuing until about 11 pm. Although investigations into the exact cause of the accident are still ongoing, preliminary findings point to reckless driving behaviors.

The FRSC Commander reiterated the importance of driving with caution, urging motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking, and the transportation of petrol in jerrycans within vehicles. He emphasized that adherence to traffic rules is crucial for the safety of all road users.

The tragic accident highlights the ongoing risks on Nigerian roads and the need for heightened awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further loss of life.
