Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to collaborate for the benefit of the state’s residents.
Speaking as the special guest of honor at an event organized by the Rivers State Government to inaugurate the Trans-Kalabari Road Project on Monday, Jonathan emphasized the importance of smooth transitions of power and cooperative governance.
Jonathan highlighted the difficulties associated with political transitions, noting that while transitions at the national level are generally better managed, state-level transitions often face more challenges. He pointed to the political crisis in Rivers State as an example, urging the current and former governors to work together for the state’s welfare.
“On that note, let me plead, because the political tension in the state is becoming too much,” Jonathan said. “Transition in Nigeria is becoming a problem. At the center, Presidents have been taking over from Presidents, there are always issues but at least it’s better managed. But at the state level, it’s becoming noisy in so many states. And I say that is not the best.”
Jonathan stressed the critical role Rivers State plays in the Niger Delta and warned that instability in the region could have far-reaching consequences. “Rivers State is very critical in this country. Rivers State is the heart of the Niger Delta. If Rivers State is destabilized, the whole Niger Delta will be destabilized,” he stated.
He urged political leaders to adopt the principle of give and take, emphasizing the need for cooperation. “Outgoing governors and incoming governors must know that they work together for the collective interest of the citizens of the state. Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara must work together for developing the lands and the people of Rivers State.”
Regarding the inauguration of the Trans-Kalabari Road, Jonathan commended Governor Fubara for his vision and commitment to the region’s development. He highlighted the road’s potential to boost economic development, enhance security, and reduce waterway accidents.
“When you make major roads across the riverine areas, you have solved numerous problems,” Jonathan said, praising Fubara for his initiative. “It’s only a person who has vision and commitment to develop his people that can do this. So, Your Excellency, let me commend you for your vision and the courage to start the project because it’s not going to be a tea party.”
Jonathan also called on the people of Rivers State to support the governor, acknowledging Fubara’s focus and commitment to moving the state forward. “He has shown within this short period that he is somebody who is focused and who has the commitment to move Rivers State to a higher level. And we need the maximum cooperation,” he added.
The event concluded with Jonathan’s call for unity and collaborative effort to ensure the continued development and stability of Rivers State.
