Gov. Soludo Makes History with Successful Local Government Elections in Anambra

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has made history by conducting local government elections in Anambra State, fulfilling a key campaign promise. The newly elected chairmen and their deputies for all 21 local government areas were inaugurated at Government House, Awka, marking the end of an 11-year gap in local government elections in the state.

Speaking to the press after the inauguration, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, hailed the development as a monumental achievement. “History is made today, indeed history broken. This is a big promise kept, as Governor Soludo had vowed to conduct local government elections upon taking office,” he said.

Mefor underscored the governor’s integrity, which he described as the cornerstone of effective leadership. “Governor Soludo is a man of his word, and today, he demonstrated that by ensuring local government elections were held. I look forward to seeing a functional local government system that will now address grassroots needs, while the governor focuses on broader state-level development.”

He noted that despite provisions in the Nigerian Constitution for a third tier of government, Anambra State had not had an elected local government council for over a decade. “Previous administrations under Governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano only organized local government elections toward the end of their tenures. Governor Soludo, however, delivered on his promise, with the elections held on Saturday.”

The elections resulted in a landslide victory for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), with the party securing all 21 local government chairmanship positions and the majority of ward councillors.

Dr. Mefor expressed pride in being part of this historic moment, adding, “The people of Anambra have spoken, and I am happy to be part of this history.”
