Governor Fubara Condemns Political Violence in Rivers, Urges Responsible Conduct

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on the people of Rivers State to conduct their political activities with responsibility, warning against the escalation of violence and destruction of public infrastructure. The governor made the remarks after inspecting the damage at the Ikwerre Local Government Council Secretariat in Isiokpo, which was set ablaze by political thugs.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara expressed his dismay over the destruction of the secretariat, which had been constructed as a legacy project by the previous council chairman. He questioned the rationale behind such acts of political violence and condemned the actions of those responsible.

“I feel very sad seeing what has just happened in this council,” Fubara said. “Play your politics with a sense of responsibility. We don’t need to kill ourselves. My time will come, and I will leave; do I need to burn the Government House?”

The governor criticized the actions of “sponsored agents and enemies of Rivers,” who he said took advantage of the withdrawal of police officers by the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to carry out the attack. He lamented that funds intended for development would now have to be diverted to repair the damage caused by the incident.

Fubara urged the people of Rivers to think critically before engaging in destructive acts, emphasizing that such behavior harms the state’s progress. He called on security agencies to investigate and bring those responsible to justice, noting that the attack did not come from his supporters.
