Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has issued a statement to clarify his position on native doctors, following recent misinformation spread by certain quarters. The Governor emphasized that he has not declared war on all native doctors but has focused his efforts on addressing the criminal activities associated with some individuals in the profession.
In the statement, Governor Soludo clarified that his administration is committed to eradicating the involvement of fake native doctors in criminal practices, including their roles in supporting kidnappers, armed robbers, and other illicit activities. He acknowledged that investigations have revealed disturbing practices among some native doctors, who are believed to be involved in performing evil rituals, including human sacrifices for money and protection.
These illicit practices, which have led to the rise of terms like “Ego Mbute,” “Oke-Ite,” and “Yahoo Plus,” as well as a resurgence of idolatry, are alien to the Igbo cultural values of integrity, hard work, and morality. Governor Soludo’s stance is aimed at rooting out these destructive practices and preserving the true essence of traditional medicine and genuine native doctors who serve their communities with honor.
“The Governor’s statement is not a blanket condemnation of traditional medicine or native doctors,” explained Law Mefor, PhD, Anambra State Commissioner for Information. “Rather, it is a targeted effort to expose and address the criminal elements within the practice.”
Governor Soludo called for greater clarity and understanding, urging the public to distinguish between those native doctors genuinely practicing traditional medicine and those involved in criminality. He assured the public that those adhering to moral and ethical standards in their practice have nothing to fear from his administration.
He also stressed the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring the security and well-being of the state. “Security is everyone’s business,” Governor Soludo urged, calling on Ndi Anambra to work together with the government to eliminate criminality and uphold the cultural values of integrity, hard work, and respect for human life.
Governor Soludo’s declaration has received support from various quarters, who see it as a necessary step in ensuring the safety and moral integrity of Anambra State. The Governor concluded by urging Ndi Anambra to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities in exposing and addressing criminality. “If you see something, hear something, say something,” he emphasized.
